What most physios and sports therapists in the UK and Ireland don’t get told is how to run a real physio business that makes real money.

You’re allowed to think that it’s all about getting on another CPD or clinical skills course and if you do that four times a year, for the next 30 years, then one day you’ll be a really good physio and you’ll make enough money to justify the hassle of starting a practice in the first place.

The truth is that idea is complete BS.

It’s a very “noble” way to think about your career path but it’s a complete disaster if you want to make real money from your practice.

It’s the complete opposite of how it works in reality.

Sure, you’ve got to be a good physio or therapist, BUT, however well you can treat a hamstring strain or ankle sprain has ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with creating a marketing plan to get 100 more patients per month through the door.

The brutal truth is there are tens of thousands of great physios and sports physios in this country, but most of them don’t make the type of money they would like.

And it’s not just because the government won’t give them a pay rise. It’s because they choose to be employed and they’re more concerned with becoming a great physio than becoming a great physio business owner. There’s a massive difference.

Another issue is that it’s simply not “cool” to talk about making money from your health care business in this country.

It’s a “taboo”, almost offensive, subject in healthcare.

The physios in the NHS can go on strike to get the type of money they THINK they deserve, but if a practice owner like you or I talk about wanting to make more money and raise our prices, it’s seen as GREED and we’re all demonised simply for wanting to fulfil our ambition.

Just for writing this page, I will no doubt be positioned as the “devil” in healthcare and have many people on “X” attacking my account.

That is fine. I expect very little else from such small minds.

But here’s the way I see it: if they want to get on with learning about how to fix shoulder impingement syndrome – for the tenth time – good for them. The difference is they plan to stay a practitioner all of their life whereas you and I have chosen a completely different path.

We’ve chosen the route of building a successful business to EMPLOY the type of people who hang out on “X” and Instagram all night and with it comes a responsibility to learn how to grow and market that business to make it a success.
